Back to Basics
As much as I love indie music, after awhile it can get on my nerves. Like anything there comes a time when you need to break free from the monotony. I’ve found myself lately scrolling through my entire music library, unable to find anything to listen to and it’s been troubling me. I’ve decided the best course of action is to break free from indie rock and head back to basics:...

Volume Two - She & Him
Prior to the days of the Internet (what I can imagine it to be) it must of been a pain to live far away from a record store. You wouldn’t purchase records very much, would you? The closest record store to where I live requires a thirty-minute drive into Milwaukee and the store only carries a small range of new vinyl, so options are limited. So I don’t go that route very often. How...

Owen Pallett, Live At Webster Hall
Article from NPR.com:
If you read the liner notes of this past decade’s most beloved indie records, it shouldn’t be hard to spot the MVP. Owen Pallett’s string arrangements helped make hits out of Arcade Fire’s Funeral, Grizzly Bear’s Yellow House andBeirut’s The Flying Club Cup, just to name a few.
But these days, his resume as a sideman is incidental....
Indie Music Album Cover Stories: JOY DIVISION -... →
The front cover image comes from an edition of the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy, and was originally drawn with black lines on a white background. It presents successive pulses from the first pulsar discovered, PSRB 1919+21—often referred to in the context of this album by its older…
This has always been one of my favorite indie album covers. It’s so simple, yet engaging.

"Our Deal" - Best Coast
Listening to Best Coast always puts me in a good mood. Her music brings back memories of the fun times spent at the the beach, soaking up the sun. It’s definitely summer music and with the spring season finally upon us, Best Coast has released yet another of her surfer-inspired songs to remind of us that summer’s fast approaching. The track is “Our Deal,” listen to it...

Of all PJ Harvey’s full-length studio albums, 1993’s Rid of Me finds the British born rocker at her most unhinged. It’s an explosive and raw album jammed packed with gritty lyrics, abrasive vocals and grunge riffs. Normally this sort of music turns me off, but for some reason I am drawn to this album. Maybe it’s the captivating cover art or tracks like “Rid of...

This weekend I decided to watch It Might Get Loud, a music documentary about three legendary guitarists: Jack White (of White Stripes, The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather), The Edge (of U2) and Jimmy Page (of Led Zepplin).
It’s definitely worth watching, even if you’re not a fan of The White Stripes, U2 or Led Zepplin (can’t imagine anyone not liking one of them). It grants you...
Though Spin magazine hasn’t been around nearly as long as Rolling Stone magazine, they’ve managed to stick around for 25 years and not loose their integrity as a “serious” music magazine. In honor of their 25th anniversary, Spin has put together an eclectic list of the 125 Best Albums of the Past 25 Years.
It’s an impressive list to say the least with albums from...

My Musical History
It was 1996 and was I 5 years old, living in Milwaukee, WI on the top story of a three story victorian home, which my parents rented from an elderly widow named Grace. My dad drove, of all things, a borrowed and beaten-up brown Buick with hideous brown seat cushions to match. He was just starting out as a traveling-salesman and drove all over the Midwest from Minnesota to Ohio selling athletic...

In honor of Record Store Day (tomorrow!), here is a fascinating documentary from Pitchfork.TV about the decline of record stores and vinyl albums. Worth watching for any vinyl collector and those who still go to local record stores!

Hear New Track From The National
The National’s new album, High Violet, is scheduled for release on 5/11 and will definitely be a must-have record of 2010. To keep fans satisfied until the release, they’ve released tracks over the interwebs for your listening pleasure. The newest track is “Afraid of Everyone,” which features backing vocals from hottie-slash-musical genius Sufjan Stevens. Listen.

If you’re one of the many people turned off by the Lollapalooza lineup this year (i.e. Lady Gaga), may I suggest heading over to the Pitchfork Music Festival. With acts like Pavement, Broken Social Scene, LCD Soundsystem, Beach House, Panda Bear, St. Vincent, Liars and Neon Indian scheduled to play, the festival is a serious contender for your money. Tickets are still on sale for the July...

Not So Fond of Dan Deacon's Remix of an Owen...
Dan Deacon decided to remix the Owen Pallett’s song “Lewis Takes Off His Shirt” for an upcoming 12” release on 6/22. Needless to say the remix isn’t exactly a pleasant experience. Instead it takes everything great about the track and blenderizes into an incoherent mess. It’s so completely choppy it’s painful to listen to and lasts more than 6 minutes....

Subiza by Delorean
Fusing the elements that has made the music of Animal Collective, Washed Out and Gang Gang Dance so successful, tribal beats, soaring vocal harmonies and vibrant synths, the dance group Delorean stand out as heavy competition with their recent new album, Subiza. With only nine tracks, it’s a sublime collection of euphoric dance songs that would be perfect for any afternoon drive around...

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – “Say No To Love” b/w “Lost Saint” 7″ Out 6/8 on Slumberland
This should be good. I’m really looking forward to hearing this new single from one of my favorite bands of 2009. Their self-title album was a summery assortment of reverb infused indie pop songs, which stood out amongst several other contemporaries. Hopefully this new single will...

My Take On Lollapalooza 2010
If I am being completely honest with myself, I couldn’t help but feel disappointment with the 2010 Lollapalooza lineup. But after looking it over again this morning my disappointment wore off. With acts like Grizzly Bear, Arcade Fire, The National, Yeasayer and Dirty Projectors, you have all the makings for one of the most memorable festival in years. There are so many great acts to choose...

2010 Lollapalooza Lineup
The people over at Lollapalooza decided to annoyingly reveal individual letters of the lineup this year in a Wheel of Fortune puzzle. It didn’t take very long for people to figure out who some of the headliner bands were (i.e. Soundgarden, Green Day, Lady Gaga), but many bands still remained a mystery. Well today there is no mystery. The official lineup has been announced to an awaiting...
Joanna Newsom Live at the Pabst Theater 4/2/10
Walking into the Pabst Theater is always a treat as it is one of Milwaukee’s most historic landmarks. Even having been to the theater four or five times now, I never seem to get tired of the Baroque architecture - it’s one of the most beautiful theaters in all of America. So it seemed fitting that the classically trained harpist would select this venue to perform tracks from her...

They're Back!
Since dropping their self-titled debut in 2008, Toronto electro-punks Crystal Castles have been touring hard and leaving a trail of wrecked stages behind them. And on April 17, Record Store Day, the band will return with a new single, the minute-and-a-half tantrum “Doe Deer”. Ethan Kath, the non-screaming half of the duo, produces. The “Doe Deer” 12” single is a...
